Davide Massa has won praise for his decisions in yesterday’s Serie A match between Como and Inter Milan

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the official got his decisions spot-on.

Referee Davide Massa had two major decisions to make either side of halftime in yesterday’s Serie A clash between Como and Inter Milan.

First, there was a controversial red card decision.

Como keeper Pepe Reina was playing his last ever match in football. And ir proved to be a nightmare sendoff for the veteran Spanish international.

Reina came off his line late with Mehdi Taremi through on goal. The Spaniard challenged for the ball, but got nowhere near it.

Referee Davide Massa initially did not see Reina’s challenge as a red card offense.

However, the VAR advised the referee to have another look at the incident on his monitor.

And after that, it didn’t take Massa long. The referee brandished his red card.

In the view of the Gazzetta, this was clearly the correct decision. Even if Taremi was not necessarily going towards goal, he certainly would have had a shooting chance.

Therefore, Reina had denied the Iranian a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Meanwhile, the Gazzetta argue that Massa was correct not to award Como a penalty for a handball by Federico Dimarco inside the Inter area.

The newspaper contend that the Italian international had his arm close to his body. Therefore, it was not a foul.
