The defence has been a great problem for Carlo Ancelotti this season at Real Madrid and the manager has struggled to keep the team’s act together.

While the hurdle at centre-back and right-back has largely been the acute lack of options owing to an injury crisis, the story at left-back is different.

Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia have been largely fit this season, but the former’s drop in form caused serious concern in Madrid and even saw him drop in prominence with Garcia taking over.

Resurgence for Mendy

As relayed by MARCA in a recent update, Ancelotti and Co. are pleased with Mendy’s performances over the two legs against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League playoff and see him be back to his best.

The Frenchman has thus turned up his quality at a decisive moment in the ongoing campaign and is rising back to prominence, taking over once again at left-back.

With Mendy slowly but surely returning to the to his best, the coach already has no doubts that he will be ready to start all the big nights that are to come across competitions this season.

The 29-year-old played every minute of Real Madrid’s recent games against Pep Guardiola’s side and did well to stay solid at the back, never really allowing City to create much threat.

He was very impressive at the Santiago Bernabeu as he racked up two clearances, an interception and completed 95% of his passes against the Premier League side.

Having gone five successive La Liga games without a minute, the games against Manchester City came as a massive statement from the full-back who is now back to his confident self.

Needless to say, he could well make his way back into the manager’s first-choice starting lineup even in La Liga in the coming weeks.
