Kylian Mbappé - Vinicius Jr
On matchday two of La Liga, Real Madrid traveled to face Real Oviedo. Despite a convincing 3-0 win, the Vinicius controversy is stirring up Spain once again.
On the road in Oviedo, Real Madrid started the game without Vinicius Jr. The Brazilian was left on the bench by Xabi Alonso in favor of his compatriot Rodrygo. That didn't faze Los Blancos, who cruised to a 3-0 victory without breaking a sweat.
Vinicius made a strong impact after coming on in the 66th minute, delivering an assist for Kylian Mbappé—who bagged a brace last night—before scoring the third goal himself. However, on Monday, the Spanish press was more focused on fresh controversies surrounding the Brazilian forward than his on-field performance. It’s clear that the former Flamengo man was once again at the center of attention.
Alongside his assist and goal, Vinicius was involved in several contentious moments. First, while still on the bench, he was seen engaging in a heated exchange with Oviedo fans. Then, once on the pitch, he picked up a yellow card for simulation. After setting up Mbappé for the second goal, he appeared to make some heated remarks—though it’s unclear to whom—which prompted Mbappé to intervene and cover his mouth.
During the match, Vinicius also exchanged heated words with the Oviedo crowd, making the infamous "a segunda" gesture—signaling to the home fans that their team would be relegated. Even pro-Madrid journalists are now struggling to defend him.
"Oviedo supporters chanted 'idiot' at Vinicius. Now, why does this only happen to you?" remarked Antonio Romero on Cadena SER. "He wins the ball, makes the pass, and instead of celebrating, he goes to provoke," fumed his colleague Javi Herraez. Needless to say, the Canarinha star is facing heavy criticism on social media—not just from rival fans, but from many Madrid supporters as well.
