Real Madrid remain confident of signing Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies but have identified an alternative transfer target if they can't snare the Canada star, a report has claimed.

Davies has long been tipped to make the move to the Bernabeu and could do so next year when his contract in Bavaria expires. Madrid are said to have agreed a new extension with current incumbent Ferland Mendy, though that deal is yet to be officially confirmed.

It is still a position where Los Blancos are looking to strengthen, however, and Spanish outlet AS say there is 'confidence' Davies will be brought in next summer.

The 24-year-old has recently been offered a new contract by Bayern, where he has won five Bundesliga titles and the 2019/20 Champions League, while his agent also rubbished claims that a deal had been struck with Madrid over a future transfer.

If that move does fall through, Girona defender Miguel Gutierrez could be lined up as a back-up target. The 23-year-old left Madrid in 2022 and played a large role in helping his new side qualify for the Champions League last season.

Los Blancos reportedly hold an €8m buyback clause in the deal they agreed with Girona which is valid until 30 June next year, though manager Carlo Ancelotti would hold a lot of influence in deciding whether they should re-sign a player he was happy to sell a little over two years ago.

Mendy has been Madrid's first choice left-back so far this season, with understudy Fran Garcia also being given minutes at intervals. It's one position the Spanish and European champions have avoided injuries in, with their current centre-back and right-back options limited by fitness issues.

Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao have both suffered anterior cruciate ligament blows, while David Alaba is still recovering from his own ACL injury.
