Carlton Palmer has named his preferred candidate to replace Vincent Kompany at Burnley after Van Nistelrooy setback

Carlton Palmer has tipped Craig Bellamy to become the next Burnley manager following recent developments involving Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch coach was linked with taking over as Vincent Kompany’s replacement at Turf Moor earlier this month.

However, the 47-year-old is now set to make the switch to Manchester United to become an assistant manager to Erik ten Hag instead.

It has been reported that talks between the Premier League side and Van Nistelrooy are at an advanced stage, meaning the Clarets will miss out on his appointment.

With the players set to return for pre-season soon, the Lancashire outfit will have to go back to the drawing board to find their next manager.

Palmer believes that Bellamy would be the best choice to take over after Kompany’s exit, highlighting the benefits of the continuity of hiring the Belgian’s assistant.

He has also highlighted Scott Parker and Carlos Corberan as other candidates that could also have the team fighting for promotion to the Premier League next season.

“Reports coming out of Old Trafford are that Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to be named as Erik ten Hag’s assistant manager, which effectively rules him out of the Burnley job,” Palmer told Football League World.

“That in itself, for me, as a former manager, is a concern to me that part of you staying on in the job is that they appoint a new assistant that you haven’t appointed, again it’s all wrong, but that’s another point.

“So, who will Burnley appoint?

“As I said, I thought Bellamy would’ve followed Kompany to Bayern Munich, he hasn’t done so.

“The other two that are very much in the frame are Parker and Corberan.

“Parker has two former promotions with Fulham and Bournemouth to the top flight, so that puts him high on their list.

“And Corberan’s had a fantastic season at West Brom with limited funds.

“I think Corberan’s more likely to stay where he is, which will rule him out of the equation because I think West Brom will ask for serious compensation.

“Not that I don’t think Burnley couldn’t pay [it] because they got £10 million for Kompany, but I think Corberan is likely to stay there.

“For me, I’d like to see Craig Bellamy given a chance.

“And the reason I’m saying Craig Bellamy is because he’s been assistant manager to Vincent Kompany, he understands the way the club operates, he understands the DNA of the club and he understands what’s going on in the football club.

“He knows the players really well, and I’d like to see him be given the opportunity to see if he can cut his teeth at management and get Burnley back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

“But, either of the two aforementioned Parker or Corberan would be very good replacements, but like I said I’d like to see Bellamy given the opportunity to bring Burnley back to the Premier League.”

Craig Bellamy’s coaching career

Bellamy moved into coaching following the end of his playing career, first moving with Kompany to Anderlecht in 2021.

The Welshman was the assistant coach with the European club, before moving to Burnley in 2022.

Bellamy has been linked with taking over at Wales following the end of Rob Page’s tenure in the position.

However, he has yet to take up the mantle as the main man in a coaching capacity, so it would be a big risk for Burnley to take a gamble on him.

Burnley need quick resolution to Kompany successor

Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich was confirmed at the end of May, and they have yet to appoint his successor nearly a month later.

This process has become protracted and it’s hurting their preparations for next season.

A new head coach needs to be appointed soon, even if the setback surrounding Van Nistelrooy was quite unlucky, all things considered.

Bellamy would be a big risk given his lack of experience, as there are no guarantees he will have the same success Kompany enjoyed when he was at the club.
