Given that Ruben Amorim is navigating something of an uphill battle since taking the reins from Erik ten Hag, he needs his concrete starters to be in stellar form while he gets to grips with the task at hand.
That’s why Andre Onana’s recent performances have raised the eyebrows of Manchester United fans, as he had been one of the most reliable figures in the squad even amidst such a turbulent start to the 2024/2025 campaign.
His statistics only back up such a sentiment, too. On December 5, StatmanDave shared that the goalkeeper had prevented 5.7 goals – none of his counterparts across Europe’s top-five leagues had prevented more at that stage.
Onana also boasts the most clean sheets in the Premier League, leading the Golden Glove race after 15 matches played with six to his name. Jordan Pickford, David Raya and Matz Sels are all joint second with five.

He did anything but cover himself in glory during last weekend’s defeat to Nottingham Forest, however. While there was perhaps little he could’ve done for the early opener, which saw Lisandro Martinez comfortably beaten in the air when up against Nikola Milenkovic from a corner, Onana’s weak attempts to stop the subsequent two goals were nothing short of woeful to witness.
Morgan Gibbs-White dispatched a low, driven strike towards the Cameroonian that looked more difficult to concede than it did to stop – it was straight at Onana and was nowhere near as powerful as it could’ve been.
Then, both he and Martinez could only watch Chris Wood’s effort loop over their heads and nestle in the back of the net at the far post when he made it 3-1 only seven minutes later.
He’s been caught off-guard with several attempts from Viktoria Plzen tonight, prompting BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone to tweet: “Andre Onana been really good most of this season but against Forest and tonight pretty poor.”
