Now it’s official. US-based fund Oaktree Capital have begun the process of taking over as Inter owners from Suning.

The fund will exercise their right to repossess the previous owners controlling shares in the Nerazzurri after the latter defaulted on their debt from a loan in the spring of 2021.

For the past three years, the sense has been that Oaktree would not have much of an interest in running Inter.

Reports indicated that the US fund would prefer to see Suning sell the club.

And alternatively, if Oaktree were to take over, that the fund would aim to sell Inter.

So far, however, the indications are that Oaktree are ready to keep hold of Inter for some time.

The fund’s official statement on the matter suggests plans for the Nerazzurri.

Oaktree Won’t Sell Inter Milan Right Away

Still, there is a sense that Oaktree would certainly be willing to sell Inter at some stage.

It is not in the modus operandi for an investment fund to take control of a football club in the long term.

Rather, the expectation is that Oaktree will aim to sell the Nerazzurri for a profit.

But Reuters report that the fund are in no rush to do so.

The view of Oaktree is that they can make an even greater profit if they are to wait.

As things stand, the US fund has the opportunity to keep hold of the Nerazzurri, place their faith in the existing senior management, and keep its value increasing.

Oaktree believe that with time, they can sell Inter for an even higher fee than Suning had reportedly been demanding – €1.2 billion.

Therefore, Oaktree will wait until they feel the right offer has come along.

Despite one or two rumours, the US-based fund is not just an intermediary who will sell Inter to their real future owners. They intend to stick around for at least a while.
