“I was really excited and pumped about Schalke,” said the 42-year-old. “When someone encounters Schalke for the first time, something happens right away. I didn't hesitate for a second. It just felt instinctively right to me.”

“I want Schalke,” he added. “We want to tackle this great challenge together. We want to approach it with positivity and enthusiasm, and work our way forward step by step on all levels.”

Muslic took over at English Championship side Plymouth Argyle earlier this year. And despite the club's subsequent relegation to the third tier of English football, he gained his plaudits across the pyramid.

Speaking on his potential side in Gelsenkirchen, he said: “We want to be active, ramp up the intensity. Our game is defined by aggressiveness, intensity, constant pressure on the opponent, immediate switching and directness.”

“This also requires a high readiness for quick action, being constantly online. It will be a process, but we will see the first progress relatively soon."

A huge area of praise for Muslic has been his people-skills, with a video of his Plymouth introduction going viral.

He outlines that this is something he wants to carry into his work at Veltins Arena.

“I know how to deal with people, with the staff and players. I am demanding and clear so that everyone knows their role. When we take the field together as a team, the guys need to know what to do in every phase of the game.”

Muslic's managerial career began in Austria with SV Ried and Florisdorfer AC, before taking Belgian outfit Cercle Brugge to Europe for the first time in the club's history.

The Bosnian-Austrian coach outlined similarities with his story and that of his new local area: “My story feels very similar to many stories here from Gelsenkirchen,” he said.

“Not an easy time, constantly having to fight against obstacles, having to work hard for everything, staying unyielding. I therefore think that I fit in very well here, also as a person.”

Schalke finished 14th in the Zweite Liga last term, and the club are looking to surge back up the table and fight for a Bundesliga future once again.

With FC Köln and Hamburg promoted last time around, Schalke now carry the title as the undisputed biggest club in the second tier, and high expectations will be placed on Muslic to oversee a transformation.

Schalke will begin their domestic campaign in the first round of the DFB-Pokal in August, as they travel to face Regionalliga outfit Lokomotiv Leipzig.
