Max Lowe is one of a number of players now committing to remaining at Sheffield Wednesday in a massive boost for the Hillsborough outfit

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a boost amid the club's ongoing crisis at the hands of under-fire chairman Dejphon Chansiri, with a clutch of senior first-team players including Max Lowe deciding to commit their immediate futures to remaining at Hillsborough.

This development comes via a report from The Star on Tuesday afternoon, which has revealed the fresh stance taken by Lowe and a number of other unnamed Wednesday players.

It has been a turbulent, often agonising summer for the Championship outfit who, having finished 12th in the 2024/25 Championship campaign under former boss Danny Rohl, have plunged into a series of crises during the off-season.

The latest non-payment saga at the end of July, which forced Wednesday's squad into canceling a pre-season friendly against Burnley, marked the fourth occasion in just five months where Chansiri has failed to pay players and staff on time.

With the closure of Hillsborough's renowned, 9,255-capacity North Stand, multiple charges and embargoes sanctioned by the EFL and the eventual exit of Rohl, too, the last few months have been devastating for players, staff and supporters alike.

However, Wednesday have been handed a much-welcomed boost with a number of players now set to stay instead of sealing exits away from the Steel City in the remainder of this month, which had been feared owing to the club's precarious situation.

Senior Sheffield Wednesday players including Max Lowe now set to snub exit action in Owls boost

Following the latest failure to pay players on time at the turn of the month, Wednesday players had the opportunity to tender notices to facilitate moves away from the club, which both Michael Smith and Josh Windass elected to do in July by joining Preston North End and Wrexham respectively.

It's worth noting that FIFA rules allow players to choose to walk away from their contracts as free agents in the event of being paid late in consecutive months, and previous reports disclosed how a number of other members of the Wednesday squad, including Max Lowe, had signalled their intentions to hand in notices.

There is, of course, a 15-day notice period to do so, and as we reach the end of that time-frame, The Star has now reported that Lowe has withdrawn his exit claim in order to commit his immediate future to remaining with Wednesday.

It's said that efforts made from within the club to convince him of his role as a senior, experienced player in a young squad facing a real underdog mission at Hillsborough were "well-received", with the defender now seemingly relishing the challenge of trying to keep the side in the Championship against all odds this season.

The 28-year-old, who made 37 appearances last season in his debut campaign with Wednesday after joining as a free agent from cross-city rivals Sheffield United, reportedly had "strong interest" from a number of clubs, meaning the latest development offers a huge boost to new boss Henrik Pedersen.

The Star's report adds that other players who had signaled their intentions to leave, the rest of whom are unnamed, have also committed their immediate future to remaining at Wednesday alongside Lowe, with none expected to depart in the same fashion as Smith and Windass.

Sheffield Wednesday have received a big boost by players decision

This decision taken by Lowe and other members of the squad is a huge boost for Wednesday, who have a threadbare squad to call upon and cannot cope with too many more departures this summer.

They need as many bodies in the building as possible, and the fact that a number of players, including ex-Premier League defender Lowe, are intent on staying put in spite of the turmoil away from the pitch speaks to the fight, passion and loyalty within Pedersen's squad.

Lowe, of course, has proven himself as a dependable operator at Championship level in years gone by and his experience and versatility, being able to play at either left-back or central defence, is vital to this Wednesday squad at the minute.

Ultimately, Wednesdayites will find it difficult to get excited about anything until Chansiri finally sells up, with John Textor's ongoing mission to help purchase the club certainly a situation to watch in the coming weeks, but this, once again, is a step in the right direction.
