Manchester United have confirmed that Lisandro Martinez sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Sunday’s defeat to Crystal Palace.

Martinez was stretchered off the field during the 2-0 defeat to the Eagles at Old Trafford. The Argentina international appeared to sustain a serious knee injury and United have now confirmed the extent of the issue.

Martinez will miss the remainder of the campaign and is set for a long spell on the sidelines.

“Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace,” a club statement read.

“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation.

“Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”

The 27-year-old’s latest setback continues a challenging period for the central defender. Martinez missed 36 games during the 2024/24 campaign due to foot, knee and calf injuries.

Speaking after the Crystal Palace game, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim lamented the loss of a ‘really important’ part of his side.

“Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player, but as a character, especially in this hard moment. Now it’s time to help Licha. I think it’s a bad situation. Let’s wait to assess things with the doctor but I think it’s a serious situation.”

Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof or the fit-again Luke Shaw could deputise in the left-sided centre-back role in Martinez’s absence. United are next in action when the club host Leicester City in the FA Cup’s fourth round on Friday evening.
