FC Barcelona are open to generating additional revenue through various avenues. They have already done so by using certain economic levers, and player sales are another way they can do so. However, not every player that can generate additional revenue for Barcelona is currently at the club.
Certain former players have special clauses attached to their contracts and those clauses can benefit the Catalan giants in the near future. Sell-on clauses, in particular, can be beneficial for Barça as they allow the Spanish side to gain access to a certain percentage of the transfer fee if a certain former player ends up joining another club afterwards.
One player who has a rather significant sell-on clause attached to his current deal is Nico Gonzalez. The 23-year-old Spanish midfielder, currently at Portuguese side FC Porto, has a 40% sell-on clause attached to his deal that could see Barcelona earn a significant fee if he were to be offloaded.
As it happens, Premier League outfit Manchester City is interested in his services and have been in contract with Porto. With a €60 million release clause, Barça could be looking to earn around €24 million if the English side ends up paying the release clause.
Unfortunately, they are reportedly unwilling to do that just yet. Instead, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are in contacts with Porto as they try to negotiate a lower transfer fee, and the journalist claims the English club is willing to come to an agreement for a transfer fee around the €40 million mark.
While this would end up costing both Porto and Barça in terms of the share they each end up getting if Nico Gonzalez signs with Manchester City, it is still a good chunk of change for the Catalan giants. As La Blaugrana look to possibly consider signings during this ongoing winter transfer window, they must first generate some additional revenue.
It remains to be seen what ends up happening between Porto and the English club, but Barça would also benefit if a significant transfer fee can be agreed upon. For now, however, the Catalan club is trying to keep their focus on player renewals before they can even consider making any signings.
