Man Utd vs Wolves (3-4-3): Onana, Yoro, Maguire, Lindelof, Dalot, Casemiro, Eriksen, Amass, Mount, Garnacho, Hojlund
United had one of their most astonishing games at Old Trafford in recent memory as they netted twice in the 120th minute of extra time to seal an incredible victory over Lyon, despite being 4-2 down on the night – and now you can expect Amorim to ring the changes after that bruising encounter.
After playing for 120 minutes in midweek, his players will be tired so he’ll want to rotate to make sure they remain fresh for a massive Europa League semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao on May 1.
Andre Onana should keep his place in goal but Victor Lindelof may come back into defence after playing the last Premier League clash against Newcastle last week.
There could be a start for youngster Harry Amass at left wing back while Christian Eriksen may be drafted into midfield alongside Casemiro as Amorim looks to manage his squad’s minutes.
Up front, Amorim has now option but to have Rasmus Hojlund leading the line after losing Joshua Zirkzee for the season and doesn’t have too many options who could replace Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho either – but he may wants to hand a start to the recently injured Mason Mount, although there are doubts over his fitness.
As mentioned, Zirkzee will not play again this season after a hamstring blow, joining Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo in being sidelined for the rest of the campaign.
Ayden Heaven, Matthijs de Ligt and Toby Collyer are still struggling with injuries and won’t be fit to play against Wolves, but do have a chance of returning before the end of the season.
Bruno Fernandes may get a rest against Wolves after being one of seven players who played the full 120 minutes against Lyon, with one of Maguire and Leny Yoro also possibly needing to sit this one out.
It’s been a difficult season to say the least for United and after losing 4-1 to Newcastle last week head are certain to have dropped, leaving little optimism they could overcome a talented Lyon side.
And at 4-2 down United will have been deflated, though they deserve immense credit for rallying to produce a magnificent comeback to reach the semi-finals and the result should serve as huge inspiration and a springboard the club can use to push on from here.
After the game, Amorim said he had been inspired by the club’s famous 1999 treble-winning season after watching a documentary about their iconic Champions League win over Bayern Munich and said it served to show that “everything is possible” at Old Trafford in a show of optimism for fans.
“I feel for the people that had to leave when it was 4-2 because of the traffic,” he said. “They will be gutted! The sound in the stadium for Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire’s goals was the best sound,” he said. “A lot of people want to keep shirts, I just want to keep that sound. It is the best sound in the world.
“I was watching again the 1999 documentary to have some inspiration for these moments. It was a great night – 4-2 with one more player you think it’s over, but here it is never over. I felt here everything is possible.”
