In the wake of Nico Williams’ surprise renewal with Athletic Club, Barcelona have been forced back into the transfer market in search of a top-class left winger ahead of the 2025/26 season.

While the deal with the Athletic forward is off, the Blaugrana are still prioritising a signing in this position to strengthen their attack.

Luis Diaz remains the frontrunner for the role, but Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has not been ruled out as a serious alternative.

In fact, journalist Chris Wheeler has shared the latest details on Rashford’s situation at Old Trafford, which could open the door for a potential move to Camp Nou.

Will train with Man United

Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa and is now set to return to Manchester United, where he does not appear to be part of new manager Ruben Amorim’s plans.

United will have to decide whether they reintegrate the England forward into the squad or look to offload him permanently or on another loan deal, both options requiring the player’s agreement.

Sources close to Rashford say he is willing to return and give his all in training. The 27-year-old is determined to prove himself and expects to fully participate in United’s pre-season preparations as long as he remains at the club.

Barcelona would want a loan

Rashford has worked with his personal trainers during his holiday in Marbella to stay in top shape ahead of the new season. However, his future at Old Trafford remains unclear.

United reportedly value him at €47 million (£40 million), but his high salary of around €368,000 (£315,000) per week will be a major factor in any potential deal.

While his representatives held discussions with Barcelona in May, the Catalan giants are thought to favour a loan move rather than an outright purchase due to their tight financial situation.

Now, though, with the deal for Nico Williams off the table, Barcelona could step up their pursuit of Rashford as a more affordable alternative to Diaz.
