In just a matter of hours, Barcelona’s almost confirmed signing of Nico Williams fell apart and has now thrown the club’s sporting administration’s plan into jeopardy.

The Basque winger, after all, was being seen as Barcelona’s next official signing with even players talking openly about linking up with Williams. The player, however, surprisingly renewed his deal with Athletic Club earlier today completely out of the blue.

Now, the Barça administration is giving their best attempt at not only fixing the club’s image that has suffered damage, but also searching for a new signing in the same position. The backup options have all now come to life.

Liverpool star returns to the fray

With Nico out of the picture now, and likely in the future as well, Deco and Co. have now returned to the drawing board to consider the options they had on their wish-list earlier this summer. Luis Diaz, needless to say, tops that list.

As relayed by Cadena SER, Luis Diaz is one of the main options for Barcelona to reinforce the left flank.

Diaz, currently at Liverpool, has an agreement with the Reds to facilitate a departure, as confirmed by the outlet. Should an offer of €80 million come in, the Merseyside club will allow him to leave – virtually making it a release clause.

Diaz had been Deco’s priority target for the left flank before the whole Nico saga unravelled. However, a deal for the Colombian will be anything but straightforward.

Recent days have not been easy for Liverpool or Diaz, for the untimely passing of Portuguese superstar Diogo Jota has taken over the world of football by shock and particularly left the Liverpool dressing room devastated.

It thus remains to be seen if Diaz does indeed push for a departure or if Liverpool hold up their pact.

After all, Jota’s death does not leave them in an easy spot both in an emotional sense and a footballing sense and a departure may no longer be a good idea.
