Manchester City are planning a major summer rebuild, and one of their key targets is a new goalkeeper.
Preliminary talks have reportedly begun as Pep Guardiola looks to reshape his squad for the 2025/26 season.
City’s 2024/25 campaign has been nothing short of a disaster.
The reigning English champions find themselves fourth in the Premier League after 26 games, trailing leaders Liverpool by a staggering 20 points.
They have also crashed out of the Carabao Cup and were eliminated from the Champions League by familiar foes Real Madrid in the play-offs.
In response to the underwhelming season, Guardiola and the club’s management have ramped up efforts to refresh the squad.
The process started in January when City forked out over €200 million (£166m) to bring in Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, Nico Gonzalez, and Abdukodir Khusanov.
They’ve now shifted their focus to the goalkeeping position.
Ederson has been a pillar of City’s success over the years, but he has struggled to maintain his usual high standards this season.
The 31-year-old has struggled to stay consistent this season, forcing Guardiola to deploy Stefan Ortega at times.
City are now on the market for a long-term replacement, and Costa checks that box.
The 25-year-old is renowned for his shot-stopping ability and composure on the ball, which are necessary requirements to fit into Guardiola’s brand of football.
Costa’s contract with Porto runs out in 2027, but he could be on the move in the summer.
The keeper is valued at €40m (£33m) on Transfermarkt, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Porto demands significantly more for the Portuguese shot-stopper.
After last weekend’s deflating defeat against Liverpool, City will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
