Lazio president Claudio Lotito lauds Mattia Zaccagni who emerged as the last-gasp hero for the Italian national team on Monday night.

The Azzurri were facing a possible early elimination from Euro 2024 as they were trailing behind Croatia in their final group-stage fixture. Nevertheless, Zaccagni came off the bench to deliver a last-minute equalizer with a sensational strike to put the defending champions in the Round of 16, setting up a clash with Switzerland.

Lotito Applauds Mattia Zaccagni

The 29-year-old’s heroics earned him the adoration of an entire nation, with many fans and observers now calling for him to be selected in the starting formation. For his part, Lotito joined the queue, heaping praise on his winger through a short message posted on Il Messaggero (via Alfredopedulla.com).

Zaccagni is our champion. He’s already a Bandiera (club icon), a splendid lad and he deserves everything he is experiencing at the moment. He is the pride of Lazio with the Azzurri.

The Cesena native has been a mainstay at Lazio since making the move from Hellas Verona in the summer of 2021. He has already cemented himself as a fan favorite among Biancocelesti supporters thanks to his exploits in the Derby della Capitale. The Italy international has recently extended his contract with the club until 2029.
