When Liverpool recruited Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen in 2022, there were high hopes for the rising star.

Ramsay had been named the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year for his performances north of the border, and arrived at Anfield for £4.2m, tipped to provide competition to Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

So far though, things haven’t worked out as the Scot would have liked. Ramsay has yet to make his Premier League debut for Liverpool, with injury problems initially derailing his progress.

The full-back was loaned out to Championship club Preston North End at the start of last season, in a bid to get him back on track.

That didn’t work as intended - injury again meant Ramsay played only twice, before he returned to Liverpool and then was loaned out to League One with Bolton Wanderers for the last few months of the campaign.

Difficult period for Scot

His time at Bolton wasn’t smooth either - after making four early appearances, he didn’t feature again. On his only league start, he was subbed at half time at Northampton Town, with the Trotters struggling to secure the win they needed in their promotion chase.

Ramsay has headed back to League One again on loan at Wigan Athletic this term, but has made only two substitute appearances so far in the league, before heading off to link up with the Scotland under-21 squad during the international break.

The team take on Malta on Tuesday, and before then Ramsay has been speaking to the Scottish media.

The 21-year-old explained that, while recent times have been difficult for him, he appreciated the support of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp last season. He admits though that Klopp’s departure has created some uncertainty for him.

“Jurgen knew what it was like for a young player to go through injuries and pulled me into his office one day,” Ramsay told the Daily Record.

“He told me Liverpool weren’t going anywhere and reminded me that I had a long-term contract. He told me to get myself right and when I was, Liverpool would still be there for me. That was so good to hear – and something I really needed to hear.

“It was reassuring and gave me that bit of confidence back. I knew that if I just did what I had to do in the next period of my career, I’d be back showing him what I could do.

“Obviously Jurgen has left Liverpool and the new gaffer (Arne Slot) has come in. So I have to start again. So far I haven’t been able to show him what I’ve got yet as I’m out on loan.”

A point to prove

Ramsay remains determined to prove any doubters wrong, and get back to his best, after being leapfrogged in the Reds pecking order by Conor Bradley, who is himself being tipped for big things and impressed again with Northern Ireland this week.

“It has been tough but I feel I’ve come back more resilient,” Ramsay said. “When I signed for Liverpool, everything was going great for me. My career was on an upward trajectory.

“So when you suddenly get a setback it’s tough to deal with. I was buzzing, then when that hits you it’s like ‘Oh no, what’s happening here?’ But I have a burning desire to get back to where I was when I signed for Liverpool and show people what I can do.

“A couple of managers haven’t given me game time so I want to prove why I should have been playing in their team. Any player wants to prove people wrong and show why you got that big move to a huge club. That’s what I have to do now.”
