Earlier today, Girona officially thanked Oriol Romeu and three other players – Bryan Gil, Arnaut Danjuma, and Arthur Melo, who spent the season on loan at the club, indicating the end of their stint.
With his loan spell now complete, Romeu will return to FC Barcelona where he is under contract until 2026 but has no place in Hansi Flick’s plans for the next season.
As such, SPORT now reports that Girona have not ruled out taking Romeu back to Estadi Montilivi for another spell, though his contractual situation at Barcelona means a decision must be made.
As things stand, a second loan spell is considered unlikely. As such, a more feasible option would be to agree on a contract termination, allowing the 33-year-old midfielder to become a free agent and choose his next club freely.
Romeu, for his part, feels very comfortable at Girona, and there is a possibility he could even begin pre-season with the team, which starts training on 8 July.
Barcelona, by contrast, will begin their pre-season on 13 July. The aim is to resolve Romeu’s future before either date to avoid further delays.
Barcelona may seek some form of compensation in exchange for Girona, but with only one year left on his contract, the advantage lies with the player.
Girona are not inclined to invest in a player nearing contract expiry, especially one who has already played for them and is not part of Barça’s first-team plans under Flick.
Still, a friendly resolution is expected, with all parties aiming for a satisfactory outcome.
