Liverpool Closing in on Marc Guehi Deal as Transfer Window Reaches Its Final Stretch

Liverpool have already enjoyed a transformative summer under Arne Slot, the manager who delivered a Premier League title in his debut campaign. The Reds are back in the mix for big signings, and their relentless push to strengthen the squad continues with just days remaining before the transfer window shuts. Having secured Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, attention has now turned to potential late business.

One name is leading the conversation: Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace defender has only one year left on his contract at Selhurst Park, and the situation is drawing intense focus from Anfield’s hierarchy.

Guehi Talks Gather Momentum

Speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, David Lynch offered a detailed breakdown of where the deal currently stands. With Palace manager Oliver Glasner determined to keep Guehi available for the Europa Conference League play-off, this saga may go right to the wire. As Lynch explained, “This one definitely go to the final day of the window because Oliver Glasner wants to keep Guehi for their second-leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League Play-off, which is a huge game for them.”

The reality is that timing is critical. Liverpool have identified Guehi as a priority target, but patience will be required. Lynch added, “We’re probably waiting until after that game so we will see what happens.”

Why Liverpool See Value in Guehi

There is a sense that all parties want this deal to happen. Lynch underlined that point clearly, saying, “It still feels like this will get done. The player wants the move, Liverpool want him and Palace want to sell because they don’t want to lose him for free next summer.”

From a footballing perspective, Guehi offers many of the qualities Slot prizes in a central defender. He is comfortable on the ball, reads the game effectively and has shown maturity beyond his years. As Lynch put it, “He will be a great option for Liverpool. He’s a fantastic player, great on the ball, wins a decent amount of aerial duels for his size and he reads the game brilliantly.”

However, there were also words of caution. Lynch highlighted that Guehi should not be seen as a quick fix for the defensive issues exposed at St James’ Park. “But don’t expect him to have solves the problems that Liverpool had against Newcastle. Konate gets beat by Dan Burn for the equaliser and Guehi would’ve been easily beaten by Burn as well there.”

A Signing Worth Waiting For

Liverpool have made a statement with their early summer business, and the pursuit of Guehi underlines the club’s determination to leave no stone unturned in improving the squad. As Dave Davis summarised, “If this one gets done then it will be a brilliant signing.”

With Alexander Isak also a target, it promises to be a dramatic finale to the window. Slot has already shown he can get instant results, with victories against Bournemouth and Newcastle setting the tone for the new campaign. Adding Guehi to the defensive mix would be another step towards ensuring Liverpool remain firmly in the hunt for silverware on all fronts.
