FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has always been a larger-than-life figure—charismatic, calculated, and never one to shy away from the spotlight. Whether you admire his boldness or question his political savvy, one thing remains undeniable: his deep love for the club.

In many ways, the president’s current tenure mirrors his first tenure in charge of the club. Taking over when the club was in turmoil, Laporta has slowly yet surely turned the situation around and made Barcelona the best team in the world again.

Fresh off securing the La Liga title and the domestic treble, Laporta was quizzed about the plans for the upcoming transfer window. As quoted by SPORT, the president confirmed that the club could operate under the 1:1 rule. He said:

“Of course we can sign, we’re at 1:1 and I hope it continues like this for many years. It’s true we were very tight, so now it’s time to work.”

The president was also confident that the sale of the VIP seats in the new, modified Spotify Camp Nou would be counted in May. He continued:

“They’re already in place, yes. They’ll probably be counted this month, but it’s worth remembering that La Liga sets the salary cap when it receives our budgets.”

An asterisk

Laporta did add a small asterisk to his words, though, admitting that the club would be able to sign, but that the FFP rules are always up for interpretation. He said:

“Yes, yes, we’ll be able to sign. It’s always going to be difficult, because the fair play regulations are very, let’s say, ‘unique’. They’re open to interpretation. We’ll have to keep fighting; it won’t be easy, but it will be even better when we achieve it.”

Laporta’s comments offer cautious optimism, a signal that Barca can once again be competitive in the transfer market. As always, though, navigating La Liga’s financial fair play rules will be no easy feat. The landscape is unpredictable, and history shows that regulations can shift without warning.

While fans may be tempted to dream big, the club’s leadership, Deco, Flick, and Laporta, must remain strategic. The coming months will shape not just the summer window but the trajectory of Flick’s project.

Barcelona are on the rise again. Now comes the hard part: sustaining it.
