Trevoh Chalobah is heading into another season where he looks like he’s going to be an important utility player, and last night he was already getting his first minutes of the season under his belt, starting at centre back in Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge.

The injury to Wesley Fofana has pushed Chalobah back up the pecking order, and especially in these early weeks we expect to see a lot of him. Until Levi Colwill and Thiago Silva are fit, we’re going to see plenty of the youngster.

He even had a special honour today in a lineup which contained almost entirely new faces – captaining the team. His reaction to that was exceptionally sweet:

“Obviously it’s an honour to captain this club, it’s a great experience for me.”

Asked if he had ever expected this honour, he modestly denied it:

“Nah, never but obviously it happened today and I’ll try not to think too much about it but obviously playing with a young squad out there I tried the younger players and we got the win so that’s good.”

He may not be first choice this season, but Chalobah is going to have an important role to play, and we don’t think this is the last time we will see him with the armband.
