Fulham defender Calvin Bassey and manager Marco Silva were left perplexed by the decision to allow Manchester United’s goal at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
The Red Devils came away with a point, but could have taken all three had Bruno Fernandes converted his first-half penalty. Referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot after Bassey threw Mason Mount to the ground, but the Portugal international subsequently skied his attempt over the bar.
United took the lead in the 58th minute when Lenny Yoro’s header bounced in off Rodrigo Muniz. Impact substitute Emile Smith Rowe went on to score the equaliser just two minutes after coming off the bench.
Fulham, though, feel United’s goal should not have been awarded in the first place as Yoro pushed Bassey out of the way to win the ball.
“It’s the same as my one,” the Nigerian defender told Sky Sports. “It’s a foul. He pushed me to stop me from getting to the ball.
“When the ref looks back on it, he will be disappointed. I can’t say too much before I get a fine!
“But come on, it’s a foul. When you’ve got to jump, any little touch can put you off. He’s got two hands [on my back]. How much worse do you need? On another day, it goes in our favour.
“It’s enough for me not to win the ball and it’s an advantage for him, so it should have been given.”
Silva was baffled that VAR did not reverse the on-field decision after replays showed Yoro shoving Bassey in the back.
“I cannot understand,” he said. “I would like to explain everything to you from the first whistle until the last but it is not my job. I don’t want to go in this direction. Everybody in the world saw what happened this afternoon at Craven Cottage.”
Both sides are winless after the opening two rounds of the new Premier League season, with Fulham sitting on two points while Manchester United have just one.
