Serie A champions Inter Milan are on the verge of tying star right-back Denzel Dumfries down to a new long-term contract.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, Denzel Dumfries is close to penning a new four-year deal intended to tie him to Giuseppe Meazza until 2028.

Inter and Dumfries opened extension talks in the build-up to EURO 2024. But the player took advantage of the tournament to buy more time and reassess his options.

Shortly after his return to Italy last weekend, the Netherlands international, who helped his country reach the semi-finals in Germany, met the Inter hierarchy to discuss his future.

The 28-year-old held a crunch face-to-face meeting with Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio on Monday.

As it turns out, the meeting was a resounding success.

Dumfries and Inter have agreed on personal terms, with the Dutch star ready to ink the contract in the coming days.

Though he has yet to put pen to paper, Dumfries’ renewal is now a mere formality, with the player accepting the club’s contract offer worth €4 million net per season.

Inter Milan Set to Tie Denzel Dumfries Down to New Four-Year Contract

Dumfries’ impending extension follows up Lautaro Martinez’s renewal.

Inter convinced their standout forward to pledge his future to Giuseppe Meazza earlier in the summer.

Negotiations with the former PSV Eindhoven defenders weren’t as straightforward.

Concerned about his first-team prospects, Dumfries had initially hesitated to commit his future to Inter.

However, the club’s persistence has paid off.

With Tajon Buchanan injured and Matteo Darmian turning 35 in December, the Dutchman should be Simone Inzaghi’s first choice in 2024/25.

Dumfries and Darmian shared playing time last season as Inter steamrolled to a landmark 20th Scudetto.

But the latter is approaching the autumn of his career.

Dumfries has recently rejoined the fold and will likely start Inter’s opening Serie A game against Genoa on August 17.
