FC Barcelona retain their top spot in the La Liga table with a comprehensive 4-1 win over Girona in the Catalan derby.
Robert Lewandowski was the star of the show, bagging a second-half brace which helped him break Ferenc Puskas’ record of most goals scored in La Liga after turning 36.
Nevertheless, Barcelona remain on top of La Liga standings with 63 points, three points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid.
The win against Girona was much more significant than Barcelona retaining their place at the top.
Indeed, the victory in the Catalan derby means Hansi Flick has now equalled Luis Enrique’s record made during the 2015/16 campaign: Winning nine La Liga matches in a row.
This run of form echoes the brilliance of Luis Enrique’s 2015/16 side, which went on to claim the La Liga title. Flick, with his high-pressing philosophy and emphasis on fluidity, has reignited that same winning mentality, it seems.

This is highlighted by the fact that Barcelona have collected all the 27 available points from their last nine matches – a streak that started with a win over Valencia on January 27.
During this stretch, Barça have also secured wins against tougher opponents such as Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Real Sociedad.
The onus will now be on Flick and his men to extend this run to ten games as Barcelona get ready to take on Real Betis next weekend.
For now, though, the Catalans’ immediate focus will be on the big midweek encounter against Atletico Madrid, in the second leg of the Copa Del Rey semifinals.
The two sides are heading into this game with a 4-4 draw in the first leg. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether or not Catalans can claim a spot in the Copa Del Rey final with yet another win over Los Rojiblancos.
