Last season was sensational for Girona, who managed to finish third in La Liga – securing their first-ever Champions League qualification in the process. However, there had been doubts over their ability to play in the competition, due to their relationship with Manchester City.

Both clubs are in the City Football Group, and UEFA rules state that two entities owned by the same company cannot compete in the same European competition. It means that significant structural changes had to be made at Girona to appease the governing body.

Those changes have been made, and according to Marca, it has been enough to satisfy UEFA, whose Club Financial Control Body has officially granted Girona permission to enter into the 2024-25 Champions League.

Girona and Man City’s case wasn’t the only one being assessed by UEFA. Manchester United and OGC Nice were also under the microscope, as both clubs – part-owned by INEOS – are set to compete in next season’s Europa League. They were also granted permission by European football’s governing body.
