A former Manchester United coach has shed light on why the club ultimately decided against signing Harry Kane before his blockbuster move to Bayern Munich in 2023.
United locked horns with Bayern Munich in the race to sign Kane from Tottenham Hotspur but pulled out in favour of signing Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £72 million.
It turned out to be a huge blunder for United as Kane went on to thrive in Bayern colours after sealing a sensational £100m move.
The England captain has been a prolific for Bayern, scoring an astonishing 73 goals in 76 appearances for the Bundesliga giants.
This season, Kane has notched 29 goals and 10 assists in 31 games across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Hojlund has failed to live up to expectations at United, managing just 23 goals in 75 games across all competitions.
Now, former United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has revealed the reasoning behind the club’s mind-boggling decision to pass on Kane in favour of Hojlund.
“Harry Kane, for me, was the complete package,” McCarthy explained (via the Daily Mail). “But unfortunately, the club didn’t see it that way.
“They looked at it as Hojlund, in the long run, would be a more prized asset than investing in both Rasmus and Kane.
“So we stopped pursuing Kane and ended up getting just Rasmus.”
Hojlund was sidelined with an injury at the start of the season but made an immediate impact when he returned, scoring in his second Premier League start.
The 21-year-old netted the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Brentford in October, raising hopes that he could become United’s long-term answer up front.
However, the young Dane has found consistency hard to come by. Despite being backed by Erik ten Hag and later Ruben Amorim, his form in front of goal hasn’t improved.
His last Premier League goal came in a 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest, but he also netted a brace in the subsequent 2-1 Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen.
However, he has now gone 15 games across all competitions without scoring.
