Barcelona club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has found himself in a precarious position this summer after being told to leave the club.
This came after the acquisition of Spanish goalkeeping prodigy Joan Garcia, who is expected to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper next season, with Wojciech Szczesny serving as the number two.
Although Barcelona are not forcing ter Stegen out just yet, they have strictly informed him that he might not even make the matchday squad.
In the midst of the ter Stegen saga, former Germany goalkeeper Rene Adler has given his strong views on Barcelona’s treatment of the club captain.
The former HSV ‘keeper defended ter Stegen, claiming that the German had always stood behind the club even in tough times.
“Ter Stegen has always stood by the club, even when things were tough, and even when personal sacrifices were asked of him. And now, after returning from a tough injury, they don’t even give him a chance to fight for his position,” he said (h/t Spiegel).

With a professional career that spanned 16 years, Adler is a respected name in the German goalkeeping universe, having featured in 269 Bundesliga matches.
Firing shots at Barcelona, Adler even pointed out that the treatment of ter Stegen is not something new for the club.
“These situations are not new at Barcelona. It’s not the first time they’ve treated a veteran player this way,” he added.
Finally, Adler warned ter Stegen, pointing out that he might lose his place in the German national team if he fails to play regularly for Barcelona.
“If a real opportunity arises at a club where he can play regularly, especially in a year like this, I’m convinced he’ll seize it. He has to. If he doesn’t play, he risks losing his spot in the national team and jeopardizes his chance at the World Cup,” he concluded.
Keeping this in mind, one would expect ter Stegen to consider a move elsewhere, with Inter Milan emerging as a potential destination for the German international.
