Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has this week declined to guarantee Marc-André ter Stegen’s role upon his return from injury.
The German goalkeeper is currently facing an extended absence after undergoing back surgery this summer, which is expected to keep him sidelined for at least four months.
Even before his injury, Ter Stegen had lost his starting position. During the final weeks of last season, Wojciech Szczęsny was preferred in goal, and the recent arrival of summer signing Joan García has further pushed the long-standing number one down the selection hierarchy.
When questioned by German outlet BILD after receiving their Coach of the Year award, Flick was asked about Ter Stegen’s future involvement. He responded, “Will Ter Stegen get minutes when he returns from injury? I cannot make any promises…”
