September’s international break has seen debuts celebrated for several Premier League stars, with Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White making his England bow at the weekend.

Gibbs-White, much to his delight, leaves this group of talented Premier League names who continue to be overlooked at international level.

Jacob Ramsey – Aston Villa

This appears a big season for Jacob Ramsey. After injuries limited his involvement in Aston Villa’s Champions League qualification last season, the Birmingham-born midfielder must now force a route back into Unai Emery’s upwardly mobile team. He’s certainly got the talent to do so, having collected Aston Villa’s Young Player of the Season in consecutive campaigns before last season’s struggles.

A dynamic ball-carrier with goal threat, Ramsey has all the ingredients to reach international level with former Villa boss Steven Gerrard having suggested it was a matter of time before Ramsey wore the Three Lions. His immediate focus will be on regaining his role at club level having been on Spurs’ shopping list in the summer.

Harvey Elliott – Liverpool

Harvey Elliott is still just 21-years-old.

Yes, really.

The Liverpool midfielder feels as if he’s been around forever, after making his Fulham debut at 15 before moving to Anfield. He’s racked up 120 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, though has failed to nail down an automatic role despite some game-changing contributions. Elliott is technically gifted, excellent in tight areas, and able to play multiple positions. The problem, however, is the strength of competition ahead of him with Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka and Jarrod Bowen all offering similar style or traits.

He’s currently stuck in no man’s land between being too good for u-21 duty and not quite enough to break into the senior side. That could change with Lee Carsley in charge, given the level of Elliott’s performances for the u-21 side. He’s the current leading scorer in qualification for the u-21 European Championship (7).

Stefan Ortega – Manchester City

Selecting a back-up goalkeeper here might feel like exaggeration but Stefan Ortega has proven to be a more-than-handy shot-stopper in his own right.

The 31-year-old has emerged as a credible challenger to Ederson’s once untouchable status as Manchester City’s number one and impressed during the second half of last season, one FA Cup final brain-fart aside.

Ortega, however, finds himself down a queue of German goalkeepers. Manuel Neuer might have announced his international retirement after over a decade as number one, but Marc-André ter Stegen is ready and waiting for a long overdue run as first-choice.

Sven Botman – Newcastle

Sven Botman’s assured performances have made him a firm favourite at St James’ Park, with the Dutch defender an imperious presence for Eddie Howe’s side. His current absence with an ACL injury has depleted the defensive options of the Magpies, who have often relied on his presence at the back.

Botman has faced an uphill task to break into the Netherlands side, making it to the Oranje bench without debuting to date.

Competition at centre-back is fierce, however, with few nations boasting the defensive depth of the Dutch right now. Botman has Virgil van Dijk, Stefan de Vrij, Matthijs de Ligt, Nathan Ake, Micky van de Ven, Jurrien Timber and Jorrel Hato as rivals for a place.

Max Kilman – West Ham

Eyebrows were raised when West Ham shelled out £40m to sign Max Kilman from Wolves in the summer but the 27-year-old has made an immediate impression in the capital. The centre-back has started the season in strong form to raise suggestions of an England call up, having offered composure and left-footed quality at the London Stadium.

England’s left-sided centre-back role appears up for grabs heading into a new era, with Levi Colwill and Jarrad Branthwaite among those keen to oust Harry Maguire. Kilman will want to throw his name into the mix and his first appearances in Claret and Blue have indicated he can.
