Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie believes Sheffield Wednesday and Steven Gerrard could be a great combination next year

Sheffield Wednesday have been tipped to make Steven Gerrard the Owls’ manager when Danny Rohl inevitably departs the club this summer.

The 36-year-old is not short of options, according to The Athletic, and The Daily Mail have now said that he will not be rushed into making any decisions about his future. They also believe that he intends to leave Hillsborough this summer.

This unpredictable timeline may prevent the Owls from planning effectively for the upcoming summer, which means they may have to approach a manager out of work when the time comes.

Gerrard has been out of a job since January, after mutually terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie spoke exclusively to Football League World regarding the situation and believes Gerrard would be a perfect match for the Owls, while suggesting the Liverpool legend will have developed as a manager during his time across the globe.

“Danny Rohl has been linked with every club at the moment,” claimed Hendrie. “In the Championship and further afield. So, it does look like he will inevitably leave.

“I'd love to see Steven Gerrard back in the English game. Obviously, it didn't really work for him when he went to Villa, which was a disappointment on every level.

“But he has been away, he's been in Saudi, trying something different. It was absolutely incredible what he did at Rangers, and sometimes you need to step away from the English game to come back.

“I'm sure he'll have learned a lot in that time. So, I think it'd be great to see. We've got Frank Lampard at Coventry, we've got Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, all learning their trade still.

“But I personally think it'd be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday if that was to happen.”

Gerrard could follow in Lampard’s footsteps to inspire the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday fans may initially feel hesitant about taking Gerrard as their boss, given the way his last job in England ended.

The 44-year-old failed to deliver when in charge of Aston Villa, and his performance was made to look even worse when compared to his successor, Unai Emery’s era-defining leadership of the club.

However, Coventry City appointed Lampard, who also had a damaged reputation, and the Chelsea legend inspired the Sky Blues immediately, taking them to a play-off semi-final.

Lampard’s stock has risen substantially since then and has been widely commended for the job he has done at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

If Gerrard could follow in his former England teammate’s footsteps, it could give his managerial career a second lease of life.

The former Liverpool captain has proven his capabilities in the past, leading Scottish giants Rangers to a record-breaking 55th league title without suffering a single defeat.

Therefore, the move could benefit both parties, who are currently licking their respective wounds. Ultimately, with everything taken into account, it may be a gamble worth taking for the Owls.
