Caughtoffside today have an exclusive update on the future of Mauricio Pochettino.

They say that despite some good results results, nothing is decided on his future just yet, and that those in charge will only make their final decision once the European places are decided.

“The possible failure to qualify for a UEFA competition will weigh heavily according to CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of the current situation at Stamford Bridge,” the site reported.

As it stands, our win over Spurs has boosted our chances big time, and our loss to Arsenal last week is our only defeat since losing to Wolves in February. The door is open for us to win today and really put ourselves in contention. But the fact that Pochettino’s future isn’t certain is eroding his authority, even with several games left to play.

A self defeating tactic adds more pressure to the manager

Chelsea have learned the hard way – both with the old ownership and the new – the major downsides with giving long contracts to coaches and their staff. Roman Abramovich broke all sorts of records paying compensation, and Clearlake already had to pay off Thomas Tuchel and his guys, plus then Graham Potter and his merry men.

Understandably that meant they were very cautious with Pochettino and his staff, agreeing to a two year setup. But as they should have forseen, that only buys you 12 months before the questions start. Pochettino seems to be really suffering at the moment due to the lack of certainty coming from above, and another complication in managing this young group is the last thing he needs.

He’s quite clearly called for support from above in these last few press conferences, and the idea that nothing will be decided until the final moments of the season might be self defeating.
