Don Goodman has shared his thoughts on Gino Pozzo's decision to sell Udinese and focus more on Watford.
Pundit Don Goodman believes Gino Pozzo's decision to sell Italian side Udinese and focus fully on Watford is positive news for the Hornets, but only if he provides more investment in the club.
Watford emerged as surprise play-off contenders after a strong start to the season, but no team picked up fewer points than them in the second half of the campaign, and they eventually finished in 14th place in the Championship.
Just days after the end of the season, Pozzo made the controversial call to sack popular head coach Tom Cleverley, replacing him with Paulo Pezzolano, who had been out of work since being dismissed by La Liga side Real Valladolid in November.
In a statement explaining Cleverley's departure, Pozzo insisted that he remained committed to leading the Hornets back to the Premier League, and it seems the Italian will now be concentrating all of his energy on events at Vicarage Road.
It was reported this week that Pozzo is set to sell Udinese, who he and his family have owned for the past 39 years, for a fee of €150 million (£125 million), and according to the Watford Observer, he will now be focusing completely on Watford as he believes there is "considerably greater potential for growth and success" with the Hertfordshire outfit.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman suggested that Pozzo could now be prepared to spend more money on Watford and show greater ambition after selling Udinese, and he urged him to bring some stability to Vicarage Road.
"I guess you could say that, if it is to be believed that they are selling Udinese to focus fully on Watford, it has to be good news for them," Goodman said.
"In reality, it might mean more investment and distinctly more obvious ambition.
"When you look at Udinese, they are a middle-of-the-road Italian Serie A team, and if you look at the history of how they have hired and fired managers, it has not been a dissimilar way to have they have operated at Watford.
"I think they need stability at Watford, and if the Pozzo family selling Udinese will give that football club and element of stability, then it can only be a positive thing for Watford fans."
Pozzo has come in for strong criticism for his lack of communication in recent years, so it is fair to say his recent statements raised eyebrows among Watford supporters, and his decision to sell Udinese in order to concentrate on the club has taken many by surprise.
While some may question why Pozzo has suddenly opted to shift his focus to the Hornets, it does appear that he is determined to bring success back to Vicarage Road, and the appointment of Pezzolano, who has won three promotions during his career in Uruguay, Brazil and Spain, is a clear statement of intent.
Any Watford fans hoping for a big cash injection this summer may be disappointed, but Pozzo will surely use some of the funds from the sale of Udinese to support Pezzolano in the transfer market, while it is also believed it will help the club to keep hold of their star players, including the likes of Imran Louza, Georgi Chakvetadze and Kwadwo Baah.
