There were several positives to come out of Manchester City’s 2-nil win over Leicester City yesterday. The performances from James McAtee and Savinho were positives to take from the game. Another one was the shift put in by Erling Haaland. Haaland responded to recent criticism of his play with a powerful performance against Leicester. The hope is now that Haaland can produce the performance he put in yesterday consistently. What he showed at the King Power Stadium was the best of his game and now the hope is that it can be displayed with more regularity.

A feature of Haaland’s game yesterday was that he dropped into midfield to pick up possession. At times, he was unstoppable, as his run that almost saw him score midway through the first half demonstrated. There is a power to Haaland’s game that Manchester City need to utilise more often. By dropping into the midfield it allows Haaland to run at defenders. This part of his game isn’t seen often but it is devastating when it is displayed. Perhaps it is something that Manchester City can utilise more going forward as they look to build their next era of dominance.

Erling Haaland also got on the scoresheet yesterday in the second half. His thumping header put the game to bed and came after some fine work from James McAtee, Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho. Although he had gone through a dry spell in front of goal recently Haaland’s finishing isn’t in question. It never has been despite what the critics may say.

Erling Haaland responded yesterday when his team needed him. All great players do that. The hope is that Haaland’s performance yesterday can be seen more often as when he plays like he did yesterday he is almost unstoppable. The power and strength in Haaland’s game are two of his biggest weapons and if Manchester City can utilise more often like they did yesterday at the King Power Stadium they become an infinitely more dangerous team. Going forward it will be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola’s side look to use Haaland like they did against Leicester to add more cutting edge to their play.
