While Manchester City are in talks over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s transfer from PSG, Pep Guardiola warns that goalkeepers must be able to ‘save and play.’
Donnarumma is expected to leave PSG this summer, as the Ligue 1 giants have signed Lucas Chevalier and dropped the Italy captain for the UEFA Supercup Final against Tottenham last week.
Football Italia exclusively reported last night that direct talks between PSG and Manchester City over Gigio’s move to the Etihad Stadium have already begun.
Donnarumma’s contract with PSG runs out in June 2026, but it is believed that coach Luis Enrique wanted a switch between the sticks in Paris also because of Chevalier’s ball-playing abilities.
Guardiola spoke about what he expects from his goalkeepers in a recent interview, and it’s indeed something Gigio should keep in mind if he eventually joins Manchester City.

“I think what has evolved most in football since I was a player is the position of the goalkeeper. The training, the trainers, the methodology – how they train the keepers is outstanding,” Guardiola told Men in Blazers via Manchester Evening News.
“Before the keeper was saving and now they save and have to play. We play with 11 players. There are teams who use it more but it is part of the game.
“It’s difficult for me to find one keeper that is not brave with their feet. It is so difficult to find. Now I’m not saying be like Ederson and have the ability to put the ball 60 yards in the pockets.
“He has an incredible ability to do that, and Stefan Ortega has this ability as well. But all of them have to be a minimum to play.”

As highlighted by Sofascore, Donnarumma’s long-ball accuracy in Ligue 1 games in 2024-25 was 44.6% compared to Ederson’s 57.9%.
The Brazilian goalkeeper also provided four assists in the Premier League in 2024-25 and created four big chances.
