After the post-season friendly between AC Milan and Roma last year, Australia could host another game in 2026, but this time in Serie A.
The globalisation of football is a continuing trend, with recent reports touting the idea of playing a LaLiga match out in the United States. There has also been talk that Italy could become part of such an initiative as they try to grow the profile of the league.
According to Corriere della Sera (via MilanPress), Serie A could open its borders in 2025-26 and have a league match played outside of Italy. Lega CEO Luigi De Siervo informed clubs yesterday of a rich offer from Australia to play a game out there.
Milan could be available for this opportunity because from January 10 to February 8 San Siro will not be accessible due to the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. The two Milanese teams will therefore have to find a different solution and for this reason a game abroad might be considered.
Much will depend on the will of UEFA, who have never approved initiatives of this type so far, preferring to see all games in the leagues they govern played in that country. For the Rossoneri it would be a return after the Roma game at the end of May 2024 in Perth.
