Everyone at Celtic is saddened to hear of the death of former player, John McNamee, who has passed away at the age of 83.
John joined Celtic in 1960, and made his debut the following year in a 2-0 league win at home to Hibernian. And over the next four years he would go on to make 44 appearances for the Hoops, scoring four goals.
It was Jock Stein who signed John for Hibernian in April 1964, having previously worked with him at Celtic when he was a reserve coach, although just under a year later, Jock Stein left Easter Road to become Celtic manager.
John, who was a defender, spent two years with Hibs before moving south to join Newcastle United in 1966, and he was key member of their 1969 Inter Cities Fairs Cup-winning squad.
He would subsequently also have spells with Blackburn Rovers, Hartlepool United, Lancaster City and Workington before retiring in 1976.
The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with John’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.
The Celtic players will wear black armbands at today's game against Ross County as a mark of respect for the former Celt.
