Today marks the 56th anniversary of the passing of one of Celtic’s greatest sons, Johnny Crum. Therefore, it was only right that the return of the photo of the day feature to The Celtic Star, should include the great man.

Johnny Crum signed for Celtic from Ashfield in 1932. The disconsolation felt by the faithful over Johnny Crum’s departure from the club, a decade later, is hard to put into words. The striker, who worked as a railwayman off the pitch, had been at Celtic for ten years. He was the man whose goal delivered the Empire Exhibition Cup and he was a key part of some famous front fives, alongside names like Buchan, McGrory, Delaney, Murphy etc.

Crum was a very slight chap, 5ft 7in in height and 10 stone in weight. Despite his small frame, he was strong, boasted two great feet and had a magnificent goalscoring record.

The forward played 280 matches for the Hoops, scoring 111 goals. Upon retiring, he attended many Celtic matches and was as fond of the club as the fans were of him.

He will always be remembered.
