AC Milan have racked up three Champions League wins in a row and are now expected to make the knockout stages, but that might not be enough for Paulo Fonseca.

As Calciomercato.com recall, Milan were able to score three times and get three more points against Slovan Bratislava last night, but that doesn’t tell the full story. Even the bottom-ranked team in the competition managed to expose the fragilities of a team that are yet to show any defensive stability.

If the victory in the Spanish capital against the European champions Real Madrid was the spark, against the Slovakian team Milan lit the flame of hope in terms of qualifying among the top eight. That in itself is a positive, after opening with wins against Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen.

The fixture list smiles on the Rossoneri because nine points against Red Star, Girona and Dinamo Zagreb in the remaining games – with respect to each opponent – is very much a target on paper. That should secure direct passage to the last 16, which gives a big sporting and financial boost.

Would a five-game winning run in the Champions League be enough for Fonseca to lock up his job? Probably not and the Portuguese coach is aware of this. A U-turn is needed in the league where the difficulties encountered have gone beyond all expectations.

Milan are currently seventh in the standings, nine points away from the Champions League places. For the club, qualifying for the top European competition is simply fundamental. This is why Saturday’s match against Empoli is even more important than the one against Slovan Bratislava.

If there is no turnaround domestically then the scrutiny on Fonseca will only grow. After all, what good is a run in Europe now – against teams Milan absolutely should beat – if there is no prospect of being back next season.
