Negotiations between Juventus and Chelsea for Renato Veiga were tense at one point due to one demand from the Blues according to Fabrizio Romano.
The January window slammed shut on Monday night, with Chelsea completing the singing of Mathis Amougou from St Etienne for £12.5m.
It was a busy day in terms of outgoings with the Blues finalising loan exits for Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell, Joao Felix and Carney Chukwuemeka.
Felix’s departure was certainly the biggest surprise given the money invested in him last summer, but another unexpected departure was that of Veiga.
The 21-year-old also arrived last summer with Chelsea paying Swiss side FC Basel £12m for his services, and in his first six months at the club he became a full Portugal international.
Veiga was signed predominantly as left back cover for Marc Cucurella, but the Blues liked his versatility given he can also play at centre back and in midfield.
Veiga joined Juventus on loan in January.
The Portuguese put in some impressive performances and featured in all six games in the league phase of the Conference League, scoring twice.
It was more difficult for Veiga in the league and he’s started just one match and made six substitute appearances.
However, it was still a surprise when he wanted to leave the club in order to play more minutes in his preferred centre back position.
Borussia Dortmund showed interest, but he eventually joined Italian giants Juventus, and Romano has shared some insight into those negotiations.
“Negotiations with Juventus were also tense at one point as Chelsea insisted on having the player back for the Club World Cup, which shows the desire on Chelsea’s side to have Renato as part of their long-term project,” he wrote in his GIVEMESPORT column.

“However, Juventus can offer regular game time and they feel there might be room for negotiation if Veiga’s going to perform at the best level possible in the upcoming months.”
Veiga impressed on his Juventus debut and he’s clearly a talented player, and one who can absolutely have a big career at Chelsea.
