Charlton Athletic announce departure of forward Johnson | OneFootball

Charlton Athletic have announced the news that forward Melissa Johnson has left the club upon the expiry of her contract.

The Addicks confirmed the player’s departure via a post on their official club X account this afternoon.

Johnson has spent the last two seasons with Charlton Athletic after joining the club in summer 2022. The forward has gone on to score an impressive 15 goals in 43 appearances for the club in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Johnson was the division’s joint-highest goalscorer in 2022/2023 with 12 goals.

With Johnson out of contract at The Valley this summer, it has today been revealed that the player will be taking up a new challenge next season. Given what Johnson has achieved in the Barclays Women’s Championship throughout her career, she will not be short of contract offers.

The 32-year-old started her senior career with former FAWSL 2 club Sheffield FC before enjoying one-year spells with Leicester City, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Bristol City. Johnson then joined latest club Charlton Athletic who she has helped challenge for the Barclays Women’s Championship title. The forward has averaged almost a goal every other game throughout her career in the second tier.
