Former Motherwell striker Gordon Dalziel has suggested that Celtic could imminently make a move for Lennon Miller but that the Scottish Champions will have to break ‘Well’s transfer record. The 18-year-old has been linked with Celtic continuously since breaking through at Fir Park but there has been an expectation that the player will move on this summer.

A number of teams have been credited with an interest including Strasbourg and Sunderland as a transfer fee exceeding £8m has been suggested. Asked on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Dalziel believes that Celtic will have to break Motherwell’s £4.5m transfer record in order to secure the player’s signature.

“If I were Motherwell, I would be wanting more than that. But, at the end of the day, it just depends on what Celtic were prepared to offer, and what Motherwell are prepared to accept.

“Is Lennon Miller looking to stay in Scottish football? That’s a big question as well — he may just have his eyes open with that.

“Or, he just looks at Celtic and thinks, ‘what a fantastic challenge it is to go and work under a coach with the ability of Brendan Rodgers.’ And, of course, being at a club the size of Celtic.

“I am sure Celtic will probably have a lot of targets lined up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you would see this moving very, very shortly.

“I think they need a couple of, for me, to please the Celtic fans. A couple of big names just to take it forward and give them that excitement.”

Miller’s dad, Lee, has suggested that a move abroad could be in his son’s future as he looks to emulate the success of Scottish midfield trio Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and Lewis Ferguson.

Celtic set Motherwell’s transfer record in 2020 after signing David Turnbull for £4.5m. It is fair to say that Turnbull probably didn’t kick on as much as all parties would have hoped, the style of play utilised by Ange and injuries didn’t help. That may account for some apprehension about splashing out on a youth player but for every Turnbull, there is a Christie and an Armstrong or, even McGinn.

Celtic likely knew that Miller would cost upwards of £6m to land the talented youngster. The question is whether there is room in the Celtic midfield at present, the likely answer is no but the player’s trajectory likely means that he will be out of reach if Celtic don’t act this summer.
