This evening sees Celtic take part in the Scottish Cup, a competition that holds special memories for us since our formation in 1888.
Celtic have won the famous old trophy on a record 42 occasions, a record that won’t be beaten as the club with the second most wins on 34 occasions Rangers 1872 RIP who are now of course defunct.
Back in the early years of our club the Scottish Cup was seen as the country’s most prestigious trophy, and Celtic won their first ever Scottish cup in 1892, when we beat Queen’s Park 5-1 after a replay despite winning the first game 1-0 when ‘crowd troubles’ rendered the fixture void.
That was the start of a prestigious connection between Celtic and the worlds oldest football trophy, and sure there have been some bad occasions also, that’s par for the course, but the good ones sure outweigh the bad, and it’s ones that are ingrained in our illustrious history.
Patsy Gallacher
Patsy Gallacher scoring an outrageous goal when he somersaulted over the Dundee goalkeeper with the ball firmly between his feet as we won the 1925 final. The 2-1 win over Aberdeen in 1937 which was watched by a staggering 147,365 which was and still is a European record attendance for a football game outwith international competition.
The 1954 win over Aberdeen which clinched a domestic double, the 1965 3-2 win over Dunfermline with Billy McNeill scoring the winner which kickstarted the successful Jock Stein era. The 4-0 thumping of Rangers to clinch the treble at the end of that very same decade.
