Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Cadiz all but confirmed their La Liga triumph, but the match was much more than just a routine victory for the home team.

According to journalist Hugo Cerezo (h/t Madrid Zone), after the match ended, Cadiz winger Ivan Alejo approached Vinicius Jr. to explain that a tweet he had posted in 2022 was not intended to be racist.

What’s the story between Alejo and Vinicius?

Alejo and Vinicius have not crossed paths since 2022 given that in Real Madrid’s last two matches against Cadiz, the Brazil international was absent from the playing XI.

After the match on Saturday ended, Alejo initiated a conversation with Vinicius who had been on hold for over a year and a half.

The last time they had interacted was before Alejo posted a tweet following Brazil’s loss in the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The tweet included the monkey covering its mouth emoji twice, alongside a dancing emoji.

The tweet went viral on digital platforms, with some accusing it of being racist, a claim that Alejo consistently denied. Interestingly, this controversy led Alejo to deactivate his social media and seek psychological help.

“I tell him that I’m going to post a tweet with some guys dancing and someone’s face covering their mouth, showing that I’m happy,” he said in an interview, explaining his side in the past.

“I uploaded it and after five minutes I started to receive responses and at that moment I realised that this tweet may have a racist interpretation.

“At no point in my head do I say it here, I say it now and I don’t have to hide, I upload it with that intention. That’s why I haven’t come out to ask for forgiveness because I don’t have to ask for forgiveness,” he added.

On Saturday, he decided to address Vinicius directly about the matter and after the game ended, Alejo sought to have a conversation with him. He explained his side, and Vinicius accepted it, aiming to resolve the situation.
