United pip Tottenham and Newcastle to the winger’s signature

Manchester United have completed a deal for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo after extended negotiations as Ruben Amorim’s attacking overhaul continues following extended negotiations.

Standard Sport understands the deal is worth £71million after Brentford hiked their asking price late in negotiations.

The Cameroon international, 25, bagged 20 Premier League goals and seven assists for Thomas Frank’s Bees last season.

Brentford and United were locked in negotiations for some time as they looked to settle a difference of opinion surrounding the player’s market value, with the drawn-out discussions leaving the player restless.

It was third time lucky for United, though, who got the deal over the line with an offer worth £65m up front and £5m in add-ons.

The deal should secure Yoane Wissa’s West London future. He had drawn interest from Newcastle and Tottenham, but Brentford were only prepared to let one of Mbeumo and Wissa leave the club this summer.

Mbeumo joins the side he supported as a child as he looks to help them bounce back from a dismal 2024-25 campaign, during which they recorded a worst-ever Premier League finish of 15th.

On joining the club, Mbeumo said: “As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up.

“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

“Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”

Mbeumo is the second attacking signing of the window for Amorim, who welcomed Cunha earlier in the summer.

He will serve as a replacement for Alejandro Garnacho, who is set to leave the club this summer after a tricky campaign. He showed flashes of class but struggled in front of goal and was frozen out towards the end of the campaign, missing out on the Europa League final.

Also set to leave the club are the loan pair of Jadon Sancho and Antony, who spent time at Chelsea and Real Betis last season, respectively. Both have struggled thus far in their quest to leave Old Trafford, with moves complicated by considerable wage packets.
