Borussia Dortmund face the biggest challenge of their campaign when they visit Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

BVB, who reached last season's final, were beaten by Barca during the league phase back in December and will be desperate for redemption in Catalonia. Niko Kovac will be thrilled if his side could avoid defeat at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys ahead of next week's return leg at Signal Iduna Park.

Injuries and suspensions will make Dortmund's life even trickier on Wednesday evening, with absentees in defence and midfield leaving the Bundesliga side short on depth for a crucial encounter.

Here's how Dortmund could line up.

GK: Gregor Kobel - Kobel will have to be at his swashbuckling best to keep Barca's band of attacking superstars at bay, including former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

RB: Julian Ryerson - Defensive injuries could force Kovac to return to a flat back four, with Ryerson lining up at right-back. The Norwegian has been in strong form for club and country recently.

CB: Emre Can - With Nico Schlotterbeck out for the season and Niklas Sule doubtful to feature on Wednesday, even more defensive responsibility falls on Can's experienced shoulders.

CB: Waldemar Anton - Anton has started the last four matches for Dortmund and has caught the eye in recent weeks. He's in for the toughest test he could possibly face on Wednesday.

LB: Daniel Svensson - The winter recruit has been readily used since his arrival from Nordsjaelland and with Ramy Bensebaini a doubt for the trip to Barca, he could earn yet another start on the left side of defence.

DM: Felix Nmecha - Dortmund must rely on their more peripheral figures in midfield given Pascal Gross' suspension and Marcel Sabitzer's injury, with Nmecha, linked to Manchester United, returning from the sidelines at the weekend.

DM: Salih Ozcan - Carney Chukwuemeka has impressed during his loan spell with Dortmund but is too attack-minded to operate in a double pivot at the base of midfield. The more resilient Ozcan could make a rare start

RW: Karim Adeyemi - Adeyemi has scored and assisted since returning from international duty with Germany and will be eager to return again on Wednesday. The winger's speed could expose Barca's high line.

AM: Julian Brandt - Dortmund's creative linchpin will be key to unlocking Barca's defence on the counter-attack. There will likely be gaps that Dortmund can exploit.

LW: Maximilian Beier - Beier has been in excellent form and has managed two goals and as many assists in recent Dortmund wins over Mainz and Freiburg.

ST: Serhou Guirassy - The towering centre-forward was at the double during December's defeat to Barca and has already proven his ability to be a thorn in their side.
