Liverpool fans are in for a thrilling week as the Reds face two critical fixtures: an FA Cup tie against Plymouth and the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park. Jim Boardman and Jay Reid, the voices behind the Scouser Tommies podcast on Anfield Index, dissected these matchups with their signature blend of insight and humour.
While Liverpool’s upcoming derby against Everton is grabbing headlines, the FA Cup clash with Plymouth shouldn’t be underestimated. Jay pointed out, “Even though we had a big game to play last night, Everton fans were instantly focused on the fact that it’s a derby next week.” This reflects a sentiment shared by many, but Liverpool must remain sharp to avoid a slip-up.
The fixture comes at a time when Liverpool is managing a packed schedule, and Arne Slot will need to balance squad rotation while maintaining momentum. As Jim observed, “We’ve got a squad, as we’ve said before, to get through it.” Liverpool’s depth, featuring academy talents like Rio Ngumoha, will be crucial in navigating these tight fixtures without compromising performance.
The more emotionally charged fixture, however, is undoubtedly the Merseyside Derby against Everton—the final showdown at Goodison Park before Everton relocates. Jim reflected on the historical weight of the match, stating, “Let’s just put a big massive red sticker on the Goodison Park archives and just say thank you very much, off we go, thanks for the memories.”
Despite the rivalry, both Jim and Jay acknowledged Everton’s recent resurgence under their new regime. Jay noted, “They’ve got this little bit of form, three wins on the spin in the league, couple of clean sheets to go with it.” But he also emphasised that this might actually play into Liverpool’s hands: “If Everton come and have a go, it plays into our hands. We’ve got lads at the back who can deal with it and more than a couple up top who can put it in the back of the net.”

With Trent Alexander-Arnold doubtful for the derby, Liverpool will lean heavily on their attacking prowess. Jay highlighted the strength in depth, saying, “Slot just turns around and goes, ‘We’ll bring on Jota, we’ll bring on Mac Allister, we’ll change it again, bring on Diaz and Elliott.’”
Meanwhile, Everton’s recent form could pose a challenge. Players like Jarrad Branthwaite and Jesper Lindstrøm have added dynamism to their squad. However, Jay remained confident: “We’ve got two massive fellas at the back who should be able to deal with him.”
The referee could also influence the outcome, with Michael Oliver appointed for the derby. Jim didn’t mince words, noting, “You can probably guarantee there will be a controversial decision, probably a red card, and it will probably be a penalty. Michael Oliver will obviously be party to all three events.”

The stakes couldn’t be higher. A win at Goodison could not only cement Liverpool’s dominance over their city rivals but also give them a significant advantage in the title race. Jay remarked, “Let’s now go there this season, win the league potentially in inverted commas by going nine points clear at Goodison Park and just put a statement down.”
Liverpool’s ability to remain composed amidst the derby’s chaos will be crucial. As Jim wisely pointed out, “As long as there’s still time on the clock, there’s still time to put it right. You can’t dwell on what’s just happened; it’s not going to change.”
With Arne Slot at the helm, Liverpool have shown adaptability and tactical nuance, key ingredients as they navigate this pivotal week. Whether it’s the FA Cup tie in Plymouth or the fiery Goodison finale, one thing’s certain—the Reds are ready to rise to the occasion.
