Barcelona returned to training today after their 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Monday night which sent them to the top of the La Liga standings.
The Blaugrana had some fresh faces from the youth and reserve ranks called up to train with the senior team under the watchful eye of manager Hansi Flick.
One such player, who has been tipped for a bright future at the club, was young midfielder Xavi Espart, as reported by SPORT.
Indeed, the 17-year-old versatile midfielder was part of today’s recovery training session with the Barcelona first-team squad.
A La Masia talent through and through, Xavi has been shuttling between Juvenil A and Barça Atletic this season, even making six appearances for the reserve team.
The teenage prodigy is rated very highly in the club, with the report even likening him to legendary former midfielder Eusebio Sacristan.
One of the most underrated players in Johan Cruyff’s iconic dream team, Eusebio played for Barcelona between 1988 and 1995, winning four La Liga titles, a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a Champions League, and a Copa del Rey.
Cruyff famously dubbed him “the diesel engine,” a testament to his professionalism, adaptability, and humility. Now, decades later, Xavi Espart, is said to be showing striking similarities to the club legend.
The most obvious comparison between Espart and Eusebio is their position. Originally a right-sided central midfielder, the youngster is technically gifted but does not rely on physicality.
Like Eusebio in his day, he is an intelligent player with excellent positional awareness and decision-making on the pitch.
The 17-year-old’s tactical understanding makes him invaluable to his coaches, who utilise him in various roles. Although he is a natural No. 8, in recent seasons he has played as a No. 10, a full-back on both flanks and even as a defensive midfielder.
Espart’s performances remain consistently strong, regardless of where he is deployed. Beyond his footballing ability, he is also known for his great attitude and work ethic.
Last season, Oscar Lopez tasked Espart with playing as a holding midfielder on several occasions, and he responded by controlling the midfield with authority.
Two seasons ago, coach Ivan Carrasco was the first to deploy Espart as a full-back, responding to an injury crisis in that position.
Rather than struggle, the youngster embraced the challenge, proving to be one of La Masia’s standout performers during the latter stages of the 2022-23 season.
With his intelligence, adaptability, and dedication, Xavi Espart is emerging as an invaluable asset to Barcelona’s future.
