Barcelona president Joan Laporta has provided insight into why Xavi was sacked in May, citing dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.

According to Laporta, the decision was driven by the board’s concern over how the team was functioning under Xavi’s leadership.

Despite the connection between Laporta and Xavi being seen as a “marriage of convenience,” Barcelona’s financial struggles and the limited availability of managerial candidates made finding a replacement challenging at the time.

Explaining the reason

Laporta’s comments came during the Ordinary General Assembly, held at the Auditori 1899 of the Spotify Camp Nou. Reflecting on the situation, he acknowledged the contributions made by Xavi during his tenure.

However, the board felt that a change was necessary to reignite motivation within the squad. Laporta expressed satisfaction with Hansi Flick’s work since his appointment, pointing out that the team is moving in the right direction under his guidance.

“I would like to thank Xavi for all the great work he has done with the club. But from the inside, we realised that we needed extra motivation. We are happy with what Flick is doing,” said Laporta as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

The disappointment surrounding last season was a key factor in the decision to revamp the coaching staff. Laporta mentioned that, alongside the influence of La Masia talents, the board believes Flick is the right man to lead Barcelona back to success.

“I will not hide from you the disappointment we feel about last season. That is why we decided to give a new impetus to the bench and to the physical staff. With the players from La Masia and Flick, success will return to Barcelona.”

Praise for Deco

Additionally, he praised Deco’s contributions to managing the club’s finances. Deco’s efforts have notably reduced the club’s wage bill by €170 million, a significant achievement in balancing the books amid financial pressure.

“We are also happy with the work of Deco, who reduced the wage bill by €170 million,” he said

Laporta also highlighted the impact of Deco’s financial restructuring. He noted that, under Xavi, sports salaries made up 91% of the club’s total income, a worrying figure for any major club.

Thanks to Deco’s work, this percentage has now been brought down to 53%, allowing for more sustainable financial planning. Furthermore, Barcelona’s player sales generated €80 million in revenue, providing an additional boost to the club’s economic situation.

“I want to talk about the impact of Deco’s work on income.

“The percentage of sports salaries was 91% of the club’s total income. It is now 53%. In addition, we sold players for €80 million,” he noted.
