Although new manager Hansi Flick has vowed to closely assess each and every Barcelona player in the upcoming pre-season campaign, there are some players who are beyond redemption and are destined to leave Camp Nou this summer.

One of them is Oriol Romeu. The former La Masia graduate is coming on the back of a poor 2023/24 at Barcelona, where he was unable to establish himself as a first-team regular.

Many now expected Romeu to leave the club this summer, with a return to former club Girona potentially on the cards.

Oriol Romeu certain to leave

A fresh report from MARCA has reiterated the fact that Oriol Romeu is certain to leave Barcelona this summer despite the club’s lack of options at holding midfield.

Romeu was simply not impactful enough upon his return to Catalonia last summer. Although he is regarded highly in the dressing room, his lack of performance and age profit could be a bottleneck for the club going forward.

Coupled with Barça’s ongoing economic problem, Romeu’s departure would make sense for all parties involved.

Exit could be delayed by Barcelona

However, the report does add that Barcelona might consider the possibility of delaying Oriol Romeu’s exit in light of recent injuries in midfield.

Pedri has recently picked up another ankle injury and could be out for six weeks. The Spaniard joins Gavi and Frenkie de Jong in Barcelona’s list of absentees in midfield.

Gavi’s recovery process has been going well but the midfielder won’t be available anytime soon. Meanwhile, there are growing concerns over de Jong’s fitness trends at Barça.

Keeping that in mind, the club might look to prevent Oriol Romeu early, knowing he could be a last-resort option for coach Hansi Flick, in case more players get injured this summer.
