There was significant concern around Barcelona’s shirt sponsor situation earlier this year, especially after the club and current sponsors Nike stopped seeing eye to eye over the terms of their agreement.

The Catalans were reportedly unhappy with the sum being provided by Nike and demanded a larger figure considering their stature in the football world. The American sports giants, however, stayed firm on their stance and refused to give in.

The situation ultimately led to Barcelona announcing the end of their sponsorship with Nike and a massive judicial controversy over the terms of the termination. The two parties soon began reconciliation and are now close to reaching an agreement once more.

Awaiting a Decision

As revealed in a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are now firm on their stance of renewing with Nike this year despite the recent confusion.

They are, however, awaiting judicial resolution on the case and are hoping for it to arrive soon. The decision is expected over the next week and will help push negotiations to the next level.

Barcelona now admit that announcing the termination of their contract with Nike was a ‘part of the plan’, likely to pressurize the American MNC into accepting their terms.

Improved terms

As Barcelona and Nike close in on an agreement, the terms of the new deal come under scrutiny, as it was a discrepancy in these that created differences between the parties.

According to reports, the new agreement will be historic. Barcelona want to extend the partnership until 2034 while Nike prefer working together until 2039 at least. The terms, needless to say, will be improved.

Barcelona will receive a renewal bonus of €150 million as it stands in addition to a fixed annual payment of €90 million plus bonuses. Furthermore, the new agreement will include a release clause allowing for contract termination in case of any future controversy.
